Meet Shondra

My Story

I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area as one of four daughters, into a family deeply rooted in ministry and service.

After graduating from California High School in San Ramon, CA, I went on to receive a Certificate of Legal Secretarial Studies from MTI Business College in Sacramento, CA, which acted as the foundation for my career path.

In July of 1993, I took a life-changing position as Judicial Assistant to the Honorable Addeliar D. Guy, III (now deceased). Two weeks later, I was introduced to my future husband, Karl Armstrong, and in October of 1994, we got married! We’ve enjoyed 27 years of marriage, and are the proud parents of three sons: Brandon, Dexter, and Kieran.

Karl and I have instilled in them our shared values of honesty, integrity, and community that we care so deeply about.

Woman of Action

I’m now a 32-year Nevada resident, after making Las Vegas my home in 1990. Since moving to Assembly District 6 in 1999, I’ve sought meaningful ways to stay involved in the community and make things better than when I found them.

We attended a meeting in September 2008, at Doolittle Community Center regarding the proposed F Street Closure. There, Karl and I met a woman named Trish Geran, a writer, teacher, and activist who invited us to join a group of neighbors to petition the City of Las Vegas to stop the street closure. Soon thereafter, Stop the F Street Closure, LLC, was born. This began my journey into activism and my willingness to stand for and with my community because I am not afraid to speak truth to power.

I’ve been a member of the West Las Vegas Plan Team, a commissioner on the Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority, and a commissioner on the Southern Nevada Enterprise Community Board.

I was a 26-year employee of the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) and served as an Executive Board Member of SEIU Local 1107 and as Chief Steward at the RTC.

Through my activism, my experience with RTC, and as a board member, I learned how governmental and bureaucratic entities operate and how to navigate them successfully. I’ve brought my expertise in these areas with me in my role in the Nevada Legislature.
